Admission to Graduate Study

Students are evaluated for admission to graduate study on the basis of the recommendations, résumé, statement of purpose, prior college and university transcripts, and an interview with the program director. It is expected that a candidate for admission was academically successful at the undergraduate level and is now ready to move on to a successful graduate experience. The college offers admission to the most qualified applicants to each program. Admission is offered to the student whose profile most reflects the ability for success and the ability to contribute to, as well as learn from, the team-focused experience. Space in each program is limited.

Application Process

To apply for admission, please submit:
  • This online graduate studies application.
  • A Statement of Purpose (1000 words) describing your personal and professional goals and how the completion of a graduate degree will enhance those goals. NOTE: MBA applicants are asked to respond to one of three more specific questions (please request an MBA program sheet from Elmhurst College).
  • Recommendations from three persons who can comment knowingly on your leadership qualities, communication skills, personal motivation, persistence, and the ability to succeed in graduate study.
  • Official sealed transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions* you have attended.
  • A current résumé documenting your work history. Please provide enough detail to document levels of responsibilities, areas of professional growth, and prior professional training experiences.
  • Students applying to the Master of Arts in Industrial/Organizational Psychology program must also submit GRE scores taken within the last five years.
  • Participate, if requested, in an interview with the program director.
  • Program-specific application requirements: In addition to the above application requirements, each graduate program has specific requirements. These requirements are printed on the program sheets for each graduate program and include prerequisite courses, work experience, GRE scores, grade-point average requirements, and application deadlines.

*In some graduate programs, students may transfer a maximum of two graduate courses (six semester hours or two courses) as determined by the program director.

International students must also submit the following:
  • An official evaluation, in English, by a foreign credentials agency of all university transcripts as well as original copies of the transcripts/degrees. For evaluation information go to www.wes.org. World Education Services is a foreign credentials evaluation service.
  • Proficiency in English must be demonstrated by scoring a minimum of 550 (paper)/213 (computer)/79 (Internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or 77 on the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) or 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
  • If offered admission to a graduate program, international students must also submit a declaration of certification of finances form before the Form I-20 will be issued.

To apply for admission as a nondegree student, please submit:
  • This online graduate studies application.
  • A current résumé documenting your work history. Please provide enough detail to document levels of responsibilities, areas of professional growth, and prior professional training experiences.
  • Verification that you have earned a bachelor's degree. You may submit an official or xeroxed copy of your college/university transcript or a copy of your actual diploma.
  • Permission to take courses as a nondegree graduate student must be granted by the program director.

To apply for admission to the MBA Option Program (for graduates of Elmhurst's master's degree programs only), please submit:
  • This online application.

  • Complete the business writing analysis (request an MBA program sheet from Elmhurst College).
  • An updated résumé.

  • Complete the prerequisites for the MBA program as outlined on the MBA program sheet.

Program-specific Application Requirements

Each graduate program has specific application requirements in addition to the general requirements listed above. Please check your program sheet for your program's specific application requirements. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT STEP IN THE APPLICATION PROCESS.

Preferred Application Completion Deadline

The preferred application completion deadline requires prospective graduate students to submit the application for admission to graduate study and all supporting documents to The School for Advanced Learning by the preferred date for priority admission consideration. Check your program sheet for the deadline date for your program. The college will accept applications beyond the preferred application completion date if the program has not been fully enrolled.

Financial Aid for Graduate Study

If you intend to finance your graduate study with a guaranteed student loan, you should be completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form at the same time you are applying for admission to graduate study or after January 1 when the forms are available for completion online. To be considered for the Elmhurst Graduate Award based on demonstrated need, you must also complete the FAFSA form and be offered admission to a graduate program by May 1. Students offered admission to a graduate program by May 1 but do not have financial need, will be considered for the Elmhurst Graduate Award based on prior academic achievement. Do not wait to complete this important step in planning for your graduate study at Elmhurst College.
