Farewell from the Land of the Midnight Sun
May 30, 2006
School is winding down and the sun is staying up past midnight. It's a pretty wonderful and wacky time in the Yukon.
It's hard to sleep because I have so much energy from the daylight. It is the exact opposite of winter. All winter, I was always attempting to manufacture energy so I could be productive. It's not a problem to find energy now.
Volleyball went really well this past month. The Canadian Opens we entered were excellent experiences for my midget and juvenile boys teams. I am going to be coaching this summer in British Columbia.
School is really relaxed and the kids are mellow. We go for hikes and walks during our free time. In the Yukon, you have to take advantage of the good weather when you receive it.
I start driving back to British Columbia on June 23rd. I can't wait. It's going to be like a safari. Bison, caribou, moose, deer, bear and wild horses are all over the place. I'll have to be alert while I drive.
I'm glad I have satellite radio!! It makes the 27-hour drive a lot more interesting. It's the best invention for northerners who have to drive a long ways to urban centers.
Tonight is graduation at my high school. Some of my volleyball kids are graduating. It should be an emotional night for them and all of the staff. They're a great group of kids. I wish them the best. That's all for the blog, too. Have a great summer!
School Sports
May 16, 2006
Well, my trip to the volleyball nationals was a success. The boys played really hard, and we took out some big teams. Now I am taking off to the midget Canadian open in Calgary. The midget tournament is for under-16 boys.
The beauty of teaching is getting involved in things that you are passionate about in your extra time. Sometimes more teaching happens with my volleyball teams than in the classroom. Being dedicated to a team, to a sport, and trying to get better every day through competition are some character builders that can't be taught in the classroom.
As for the classroom, we have less than one month to go. The kids have been great, and while I was gone the substitute teacher and educational assistant did a great job.
I spent a lot of time today setting up the sub plans for my two-day absence. Anyways, back to packing. Can't wait for Calgary.
Off to the Nationals
May 3, 2006
It's the night before my trip to Vancouver for the juvenile volleyball nationals. My team is really stoked about the trip and excited about our chances of doing well. I coach the under-17 boys' team.
I spent the last class and time after school creating lesson plans and activities for my substitute teacher. I will be gone three teaching days, so it is my responsibility to leave plans for my substitute teacher.
A friend will be covering for me, and my co-worker in the classroom (the educational assistant) has lots of experience and understands our daily routines.
It's nice to know that the classroom is in good hands while I am gone. Otherwise, it can be more work when I get back if things haven't gone smoothly.
It's late, and I still have some packing to do, so I better get going. I'll report our results when I get back to Whitehorse.
